The Badminton Association of Hong Kong, China (BAHKC) is dedicated to promoting the sport of badminton. With strong support from the badminton community and as evidenced by multiple studies, badminton remains one of the most popular sports in Hong Kong. The BAHKC actively supports and implements the Hong Kong SAR Government’s sports policy, driving progress across all strategic areas:
(I) Sports for All
The BAHKC’s “Sports for All” initiatives engage over 300,000 participants annually in various activities and competitions.
We organize more than one hundred training classes each year for children and youth aged 5 to 18, including the “Talent Little Stars Training Course” “Badminton Award Scheme,” “Community Sports Club Scheme,” and outreach programmes under the “School Sports Programme.”
Our portfolio of local tournaments caters to all levels and includes the “Hong Kong Annual Championships” (over 3,500 participants), “Hong Kong Youth Championships” (3,000 participants), “Doubles League” (over 6,000 participants), as well as the “Inter-School Cup,” “President Cup,” “Ladies’ Cup,” and “Family Fun Day.”
In collaboration with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), we support 15 community badminton clubs under the Community Sports Club Scheme. Through LCSD subsidized exchange programmes, we have organized training camps in locations such as Malaysia and Thailand, facilitating skill development and cultural exchange for young athletes.
AirBadminton
Aligned with the global promotion of AirBadminton by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), the BAHKC established the AirBadminton Association of Hong Kong, China Limited in August 2022. We promote this accessible outdoor format through competitions, school demonstrations, and community events. Hong Kong’s participation in the BWF’s inaugural Asian regional AirBadminton competition in 2023 marked a historic milestone. In 2025, HKG team won the Team Relay Champion title, the Women’s Triples Gold, and the Men’s Triples Silver at the BWF Asia Pacific AirBadminton Championships. They also secured a Silver medal in the Men’s Triples and a Bronze medal in the Women’s Triples at the AirBadminton World Cup.
(II) Elite Sports
Athletes representing Hong Kong, China have consistently achieved excellence in international badminton. Designated a “High Performance Sport” in Hong Kong since 1991, badminton is recognized for its popularity and competitiveness. The HKG Team, training at the Hong Kong Sports Institute, is one of six sports receiving “Tier A*” elite support.
The BAHKC manages a structured feeder system to identify and nurture talent. From a broad base of junior participants, athletes progress through targeted programmes such as the “Young Athletes Training Programme”, “Regional Squad Training Programme” and “Elite Squad Training Programme”, with the most promising athletes advancing to systematic training at the Hong Kong Sports Institute.
(III) Major Sports Events
The BAHKC possesses a strong track record in hosting international events. Since 1982, we have organized nearly 40 tournaments, including the Thomas Cup, Uber Cup, and various BWF World Tour events, attracting top global talent from over 20 countries and regions.
The Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships, a BWF World Tour Super 500 event, receives global broadcast coverage of over 900 hours, showcasing Hong Kong as a premier events destination. The tournament draws nearly 40,000 spectators annually to the Hong Kong Coliseum.
We also host regional competitions such as the Greater Bay Area Youth Invitational Tournament.
(IV) Professionalisation
The BAHKC upholds the principles of openness and fairness in corporate governance, continuously reviewing and implementing relevant codes of conduct. We provide annual governance updates and professional training—including corporate governance and first-aid refresher courses—to our Board members and Secretariat staffs to maintain high standards of professionalism.
We conduct comprehensive coaching and umpiring courses to develop specialized professionals to assist in the promotion and development of badminton in Hong Kong. Currently, the Association has a total of 274 registered coaches and 270 registered umpires. This includes 2 Badminton World Federation Referee, 2 Badminton Asia Referee, 5 Badminton World Federation Umpires, and 2 Badminton Asia Umpires. They provide umpiring services for competitions organized by the Association, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), other organizations, as well as international events, contributing nearly 20,000 service hours annually.
The Association also proactively trains event operations personnel for major tournaments, with the aim of preparing for more future badminton sports spectacles. This initiative actively enhances the professionalism of badminton sports talents and cultivates more outstanding professionals for the sports industry.
(V) Commercialization
By organizing major international tournaments, the BAHKC promotes Hong Kong globally, enhances the city’s international image, and attracts world-class athletes and visitors, thereby stimulating sports tourism and related industries. We actively develop corporate partnerships and secure sponsorships, which provide crucial funding for badminton development while delivering valuable brand exposure for our partners.
With the support of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Hong Kong Sports Institute, our sponsors, affiliated clubs, and the community, the BAHKC is committed to advancing badminton in Hong Kong through a multi-faceted strategy encompassing elite development, international events, community engagement, professional standards, and commercial sustainability.
