The six-day LI-NING Hong Kong Open kicked off at the Coliseum in Hung Hom yesterday (10th), bringing exciting badminton matches for the fans. To support one of Hong Kong’s major sporting events, the Jockey Club joined hands with tournament organisers as the official community partner, and will also work with the Badminton Association of Hong Kong, China, to launch the ‘Jockey Club Hong Kong Open Badminton Community Programmes’ in the next two years. The project will provide a series of community activities, including giving out free tickets to the underprivileged, juniors and the general public, setting up booth games outside the venue, and inviting star players to play games with the public so that more people can enjoy the tournament.

During the tournament, public can join free badminton-related booth games at the Coliseum Piazza. There are also lantern riddles as the Mid-Autumn Festival is approaching. Participants can also check in at the booths, and if they can answer some funny questions about badminton and win the booth games, they will receive special stickers with players’ head shots and Eco bags as souvenirs.
One of the young fans, Sophie, came to the Coliseum for two consecutive days under the guidance of her mother to support Hong Kong’s Tang/Tse pair. Sophie, who started playing badminton two years ago, also tried out the booth games and played some badminton games with friends in the open courts. “I feel so happy today, especially the outdoor badminton which I enjoyed a lot. I also tried the lantern riddles which are very funny,” she said.
Three students came to watch the tournament right after school and met Hong Kong, China representative Ng Ka Long Angus for photos. “We did expect to meet some star players on their way to the venue but were surprised to see Ng as the first player we met. Other than Ng, we also want to watch other Hong Kong players, especially Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet in the ‘Last Dance’ in Hong Kong.”
The trio said the Hong Kong Open is one of the few high-quality tournaments and therefore they would not miss the opportunity to watch performances of some of the best players from all over the world.
